We had been rather short of sopranos a fortnight ago, but an SOS to Chamber Choir members helped assemble a wonderful team of singers who I hope will join us for future services. Well done all! And to Claire on the organ, too. Make sure you’re all on our mailing list. An email to Helen will ensure it happens.

Looking forward to conducting our RSCM Area Singers at St Albans Cathedral this Sunday. 11.15am Choral Eucharist with Darke in E and Byrd’s Sacerdotes Domini. Evensong at 6.30pm has Sumsion in A and Harris’ Come down, O love divine. At the organ will be Claire Cousens, the new Director of Music at Rochester Grammar School.
Excellent to have A* and A grades for Music all the way at school. All 3 candidates obtained Grade A at A level and our 29 GCSE candidates received 19 A* and 10 A grades. A good year which puts HABS, once again, in the top ten of The Times League Table. A splendid way to finish one’s school career!
Always good to help out my colleagues when they go on their well-earned holidays and have a break from regular playing. Do let me know if I can plug the gap for you.

I’m accompanying Potters Bar Community Choir for their Summer Serenade in the Wyllyotts Theatre on Sunday 17th July at 7pm. And, you’ve guessed it, the second half gives more than a passing nod to this country’s greatest spy – James Bond.
Choir directed by Jill Knight with additional solos on Clarinet and Saxophone by Benjamin Adams.
At the end of my school retirement speech in July, throughout which I had encouraged my colleagues at Habs to sing a short musical riff to “noo”, we finally added the text – “muhley dot com” and recorded it (with professional cameraman) in one hit. Outstanding. Thank you to all of the staff who gave their time and energy so willingly. And good luck for the year ahead.
Fr Benjamin Weitzmann celebrates his first (High) Mass as a priest on Wednesday with music supplied by the Choir of St John’s, Boxmoor. Darke in E with Stanford’s B flat Jubilate, plus propers. And, of course, plenty of incense. Bach before and aft. Service begins at 7.00pm.
Huge congratulations to my Great Uncle Jack on his 100th birthday today. Typically, before breakfast, he was out in his immaculately tended huge garden, weeding and nurturing his plants with loving care. Even HM The Queen remembered his birthday.
We will raise a glass this afternoon!
Delighted to have been chosen at today’s meeting of Trustees to be the new Chairman of St Albans Cathedral Music Trust in succession to Gerald Corbett who has been at the helm so successfully (and with great humour) for the past five years. A great privilege to work with such a dedicated team of Trustees and with the very supportive staff in the Cathedral Development Office.
There is much to do, both financially and in other ways, to sustain the wonderful music-making that can be heard in the Cathedral day by day. And we’re getting there – with the support of the large body of loyal patrons who contribute in so many ways.
I look forward to the years ahead!
