Trained at the Royal College of Music as a first study organist, I held church positions for over 30 years including 24 years at St Peter’s Church in St Albans where I ran a choir of men and boys. I have been freelance since 2004.  I am well acquainted with all the standard cathedral repertoire and frequently accompany choirs of all standards.

As St Albans Cathedral’s Parish Organist I’m a liturgical organist: I cover the action with improvisation as required and blend the liturgy together. I accompany hymns and choruses with as much care and attention as I play the propers and psalms.  I am punctual and arrive in good time to speak with those who will wish to brief me.

In St Albans I frequently accompany the cathedral choirs as well as playing throughout Hertfordshire and London, albeit mostly north of the river. I am available on a number of Sundays and during the week.

I am also Principal Organist at St Nicholas’ Church in Harpenden where I accompany a large, proficient choir in weekly Choral Evensong and play for numerous other services.

Chris is the ideal musician from a clergy point of view. He is an excellent organist and choirmaster with an instinctive feel for liturgy and worship, who knows how to bring their musical best out of both choirs and congregations. He is dependable, organised, creative, co-operative, diplomatic, sensitive to people and atmosphere – and fun. Highly user-friendly and warmly recommended.

The Very Reverend Jeffrey John, Dean of St Albans Cathedral
