ABRSM Exam Accompanist
Many thanks, as always, for your great accompaniments and your lovely sense of humour!  I hope that there will be plenty more opportunities for you to accompany my singers next year, they all appreciated your expertise and kindness.
Lynne Hirst, Teacher of Singing, Haberdashers’ School for Girls, Elstree – July 2018

Chris has been teaching my 16 year old son for almost 2 years and I would highly recommend him.  Under his superb and sympathetic teaching my son recently achieved a very high distinction in his grade 8 ABRSM organ exam.  He is always very professional, punctual and accommodating.

Anne Sellis – January 2018

Chris is the ideal musician from a clergy point of view. He is an excellent organist and choirmaster with an instinctive feel for liturgy and worship, who knows how to bring their musical best out of both choirs and congregations. He is dependable, organised, creative, co-operative, diplomatic, sensitive to people and atmosphere – and fun. Highly user-friendly and warmly recommended.

The Very Reverend Jeffrey John, Dean of St Albans Cathedral

Chris Muhley’s consistently brilliant organ and piano accompaniments, and his ability to move seamlessly between the two, deserves high praise.

Hertford Choral Society

In my 45 years as a conductor of church choirs, I have worked with numerous organists, from the technically-brilliant to the utterly appalling.  A choir can spend many weeks working towards a performance which may last for no more than a few minutes, and the accompanying organist can enhance that performance – turning it into something which is far more meaningful to the congregation than could ever have been envisaged – or they can undermine it in ways which are often far too subtle to define.

I was extraordinarily fortunate in having Chris as my regular organist at St John the Evangelist, Palmers Green for a number of years, and I can truly say that I have never worked with anyone better. His ability to accompany sensitively, to follow a beat (even when he disagreed with the tempo!), to come up with imaginative registrations, and to retain a sense of humour in the most difficult circumstances never ceased to amaze me. He also has the rare gift of being able to improvise stunningly well, weaving tunes together to produce musical knitwear of the highest quality. He is truly the perfect liturgical organist – book him if you get the chance!

Trevor Ford FRSCM ARAM HonRCM HonRCO

Chris has played for Choral Evensongs at St. Eth’s and for our Nine Lessons and Carols service. He is a true professional. The choir always feel secure and inspired when he is accompanying on the organ. I know that I can rely on him to produce sensitive, well-balanced and musical support in all that he plays. It’s a real joy and privilege to be able to work alongside him.

Jill Knight, Director of Music, St. Etheldreda’s Church, Old Hatfield, Herts.

I’m delighted to support Chris in the next stage of his illustrious career. Chris has so much to offer (just take a look down his website headings) and don’t hesitate to book him!

Paul Harris, Composer and Author (Faber Music)

I have known Chris Muhley since we were both students at the Royal College of Music and work with him closely now in St Albans, where he helps us out at the Cathedral, especially with some Sunday morning Parish Eucharists and for weddings and funerals in holiday time. I always feel secure leaving things in Chris’s capable hands. His particular enthusiasm and skill is in inspiring both choirs and congregations in their singing in worship, particularly by strong rhythmic hymn singing where the congregation feels led and encouraged to participate in the singing. Whilst obviously his skills have been trained to a very professional level, Chris is musically flexible and willing to grasp any musical style and make the best of it so that everyone’s experience in the worship is enhanced.

Andrew Lucas, Master of the Music, St Albans Cathedral

Chris Muhley comes fresh to each and every musical task and opportunity.
He is a super musician to work with – creative, supportive and he really gets the best out of each situation.
He is consistently well-organised, good-humoured, and highly competent in both rehearsal and performance.
Thank you, Christopher!

Alison Fisher, Director of Music, St Mary-at-Finchley Parish Church, London N3 1TR

I have known Chris Muhley for 32 years, singing back then in his excellent choir at St Peter’s Church, St Albans. As an 18 year old I was struck by his musical confidence and authority, and also by his charm, warmth and humour. This combination of musical and personal skills brings out the very best in any musical setting, whether Chris is rehearsing a choir or orchestra, accompanying at the piano or organ, performing as an organist, adjudicating, or teaching.

Chris is an outstanding accompanist, always sensitive, musical and thinking a step ahead, and I looked forward to the occasions when he accompanied Ealing Abbey Choir. He always produced a remarkable colour palette from the organ, and his improvisations were a joy to hear. More recently I had the pleasure of adjudicating his students at The Haberdashers’ Boys’ School, and the great wealth of musical talent on display at the school clearly showed another of his gifts, that of musical leadership. Chris is a special part of the musical world and I recommend him to you without reservation.

Professor Timothy Blinko, Head of Music, The University of Hertfordshire

Chris is unfailingly good humoured and utterly reliable. He encourages the best from singers, is diplomatic, liturgically sensitive, and supremely proficient at the organ bench. I recommend him most warmly.

The Reverend James Reveley, Vicar of St Andrew’s Bedford, February 2016

I have been a member of the St Albans RSCM Area Chamber Choir since 2011 and always look forward to Chris’s choir direction in both rehearsals and services. He gets musicality out of us that we didn’t know we had, always with a cheeky sense of humour.

Michael Brooks – Local RSCM Area Chamber Choir Member

A first class, reliable and enthusiastic organist, whose playing of voluntaries and accompaniment of congregational singing is excellent.

The Reverend Canon David Lawson, Rector of Langelei Benefice, Herts

Chris is not merely a highly skilled musician himself but works very well in a team with other professional musicians, students, clergy, and volunteers in churches across the Diocese and beyond; such diverse experience helps to create links between churches, communities and relevant charitable organisations, and between groups within churches; actively helping to build up the Body of Christ through music.
