Biography
I have worked as a musician in the St Albans Area for over 40 years. I became Organist & Choirmaster of All Saints’, Leavesden in 1974 before moving to St Peter’s, St Albans as Director of Music in 1976. Whilst there I ran a renowned choir of men and boys who made frequent foreign tours and recordings and I initiated the first Girls’ Choir in the City and established an All-Age Orchestra. In 2000 I moved to St Saviour’s, St Albans before becoming a freelance organist in 2004. In this capacity I work with many churches in St Albans and London Dioceses.
I am now St Albans Cathedral Parish Organist and Director of the Parish Choir which mainly functions at the 9.30am Sunday Parish Eucharist. I am also Principal Organist at St Nicholas’ Church, Harpenden.
As a choir trainer I had three finalists in the BBC Young Chorister of the Year Competition, with a winner in 1999 who millions will have seen at the Millennium Dome at the turn of the century. Throughout this time I have been on and off the local RSCM Area Committee, taking various roles such as Awards Officer, running courses and taking Area Choir Festival rehearsals. I was the RSCM Area Chairman for seventeen years and have been pleased to conduct the RSCM Area Choirs’ Festivals in St Albans Cathedral in 2012 and 2016. In March 2018 I was proud to receive a RSCM Certificate of Special Service, bestowed by the RSCM Council, for making a significant contribution to church music in our local Area.
My main job since leaving the Royal College of Music, where I studied with Richard Popplewell and Herbert Howells, and The University of London’s Institute of Education, was as a school teacher. I was number two in the music department at Watford Boys’ Grammar School before becoming Director of Music at Hitchin Boys’ School in 1985. From 1997-2016 I was Director of Music at The Haberdashers’ Boys’ School, Elstree. Under my guidance HABS gave six concerts at the Barbican Hall, most recently in February 2016. I retired from school teaching in the summer of 2016 to pursue a freelance career.
I am Chairman of St Albans Cathedral Music Trust, helping to promote music in the Cathedral and secure financially its musical tradition. I am also a member of the Alban Foundation.
In addition to St Albans Cathedral Parish Choir I conduct the RSCM St Albans Area Chamber Choir.
I have been a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts for over 25 years.
